Many cosmetologists and hair experts may agree that wearing hair extensions will not cause any damage to your natural hair. Which in fact, is not true! So, I am going to keep it funky with you, if not properly maintained wearing hair extensions for an extended period of time may cause hair damage or hair loss. I know, several of you are saying to yourselves, "I've been wearing extensions for years with no problems". That may be so, that just means you are taking care of your hair underneath your install. However, for those of you that can relate and are experiencing hair loss, due to wearing hair extensions, I have some great tips for you!
The Disadvantage Of Using Hair Bonding Glue
We all have had the quick weave installs done where hair glue is used in securing the hair extensions either on a cap or your scalp. Some of us have had good experiences and some bad. Why? Because hair glue is the worst to use! It can be hard to remove causing severe hair damage and you are unable to care for your natural hair properly while using the glue method. This is the #1 reason many prefer sew-in installation for hair extensions and wigs.
Hair Extensions and Hair Loss
Using the sew-in method can also cause hair damage or hair loss. Before having sew-in extensions installed, your stylist will braid or cornrow your hair to secure the extensions. The dilemma is if your hair is braided too tight, it causes tension which will lead to hair damage and hinder the growth process. Also known as Traction Alopecia.
Many of us just go and get our hair cut and hope that will help, the truth is, a hairstyle change is not always the solution for thinning hair or hair loss. That is a sign that you may have to see a hair loss specialist because there may be something else going on.
How can you prevent this from happening to you? TAKE CARE OF YOUR HAIR! Taking care of your natural hair while wearing hair extensions is a must.
- Make sure you are using the correct shampoos, conditioners, and moisturizers to prevent hair from becoming dry and brittle.
- Ask your stylist not to braid your hair so tightly before installs (Use a growth oil or serum on your scalp in between the braids)
- Let your hair breathe in between styles!
- Protect your natural hair and extensions by wearing a bonnet or scarf to bed (Optional: Satin or silk pillowcases are recommended)
- Diet and exercise also go hand in hand when trying to prevent hair loss
